Clients: Election Campaigns

Election Campaigns are where Lincoln Voters first cut its teeth and where we continue to make history. Taking out incumbents is the prerequisite for any revolution, and Daniel Squadron just became our second giant killer after fellow youth reformer Brian Kavanagh in 2006. So Lincoln Voters is revolutionary software in the truest sense.

2008 Campaigns

Speaker Sheldon Silver for State Assembly faced his first primary challenge in 20 years. Although his re-election was never in doubt, the Speaker sought to avoid a narrow victory. That would signal weakness which could attract stronger competition in the next election cycle, or encourage a leadership coup. Silver brought in the best campaign management team at BerlinRosen, enlisted the field muscle of the Working Families Party, and walked his district himself to make personal contact with thousands of voters. This massive effort was organized and tracked by Lincoln Voters software, driving the Speaker's 68% to 23% win (with 9% for the third-place finisher) for a crushing 45% margin of victory.

Daniel Squadron for State Senate, although just 28 years young, took out 30-year veteran incumbent Martin Connor by 54% to 46% in the season's biggest upset. Squadron, like Silver, secured the endorsement of the Working Families Party. As reported by the New York Sun, "[T]he party's large-scale canvassing effort may have been a decisive factor. Officials say its paid workers and volunteers knocked on 40,000 doors in the Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan district, identified 9,000 likely supporters of the candidate, and helped shepherd 5,000 of them to the polls on Tuesday. Mr. Squadron won by 2,000 votes." Here too, their massive deployment of field resources was driven by Lincoln Voters software.

2007 Campaigns

Andrea Masley for Civil Court Judge faced a petition drive in one of the toughest districts — the Upper East Side. Not only did the campaign collect 8500 signatures and successfully defend them, but they were also able to challenge her opponent's petition to knock her off the ballot. The campaign credits Lincoln Voters software for their early, low-cost victory.

2006 Campaigns

Brian Kavanagh for State Assembly seized an opportunity when Assembly Member Silvia Friedman narrowly won her seat in a Special Election earlier that year. Kavanagh went forward in his second attempt at elected office rearmed with our ever-improving software, having already built an outstanding field operations team the year before during his run for City Council. The campaign asserts that by acting as a force multiplier, Lincoln Voters was decisive in Kavanagh's 350-vote margin of victory against a sitting incumbent.

Linda Rosenthal for State Assembly secured the Democratic line but still faced more than token opposition in the Special Election to replace Scott Stringer on the Upper West Side. Charles Simon, the son-in-law of former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw, had raised $200,000 and was running on his own West Side Progressives line. Although the entire campaign lasted only a single month and Rosenthal ended up winning with 60% of the vote, her team still found Lincoln Voters invaluable for their GOTV outreach.

Andrew Cuomo for Attorney General needed to verify petition signatures in two upstate Congressional districts — distribution is a key requirement for statewide drives in New York and is the first place an opponent will look for weakness. Even for limited usage, the peace of mind that Lincoln Voters provides is money well spent.

Charlie King for Attorney General ran the largest petition drive in New York State in 2006, submitting 50,000 signatures to get on the ballot. Global Strategies Group organized a team of one dozen volunteers working full time for six weeks, using Lincoln Voters to verify registration and assign Congressional districts to every last signature. Our software provided efficient lookups against 11,000,000 registrations, handling the volume without breaking a sweat.

Ken Diamondstone for State Senate faced more than the party machine with his insurgent campaign against former Senate Minority Leader Martin Connor. Connor is one of the state's top election lawyers, so Diamondstone's number one concern was submitting a rock-solid petition. Lincoln Voters identified the big buildings for the Manhattan portion of his district and provided block-by-block walks for the Brooklyn side. Not only did Diamondstone secure his spot on the ballot, but — utilizing our GOTV modules — he received 45% of the vote on Primary Day, falling just 2200 votes short of an upset against an entrenched incumbent long considered unassailable.

Assemblyman Scott Stringer for Manhattan Borough President faced the most competitive race in New York that year, running against five other sitting elected officials with $8.6 million spent in total. The campaign logged untold hours on the system to verify 10,000 petition signatures, track 10,000 candidate preferences and coordinate 20,000 campaign contacts. When Stringer won decisively by a nine-point margin, Lincoln Voters secured its reputation as the unbeatable field operations product in the New York marketplace.

Brian Kavanagh for City Council knew that field would be key to winning a crowded race in the ethnically diverse Lower East Side district. He also knew that no existing field operations software product was up to the task. It was at Kavanagh's personal suggestion that Scott Jeffrey began developing Lincoln Voters, and in just six weeks he already had software that set the standard for the industry. Kavanagh's second place finish in a field of seven positioned him to run for State Assembly the following year — finding his second attempt to be the charm.
